Thanks Jimmy, desktop-base was missing indeed.
I am intrigued now: how touse the grub splash-screen
included? The grub doco still says only xpm is
supported; has debian patched grub to support png,
or is one supposed to perform the conversion?

You will find them in /usr/share/images/desktop-base if you can't find them then you need to install "desktop-base" and you may also need to install "kdmtheme" the KDM theme manager to get the KDM splash, "moreblue-orbit" is the name of the theme.
