OK, that makes sense.
I shutdown exim's deamon last night before retiring and had mail from
cron this morning before restarting exim.
I would guess that Mutt does the same since messages sent from Mutt
when exim's deamon is not running still get into the mailq.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd seen that,
just hadn't gotten up the nerve to try it.
