I correct myself, /dev/null exists, at least on my system (lenny), on the "underlying" /dev with the minimal set of devices on there. So it should never not exist as far as I can see. Did you do anything that might have deleted it, or are you in some "odd" situation such as a chroot where it's not created, perhaps?
