Sure.
I didn't install for the AMD64 architecture. I installed the x86
architecture, even though I have a new gnarly PhenomII system,
because I am unsure that all the various 64-bit issues have been
solved. I'm not interested in creating 32-bit environments in order
to run, for example, Google Earth, which I remember there being
problems with on 64-bit systems some time ago.
Just like I use KDE-3 rather than KDE4, to give the system time to
mature.
However, Debian packages a kernel build, in the x86 repository, of a
kernel compiled with optimizations for the AMD-64 CPU, just as there
is a 686 and 486 optimized kernel package.
I can actually tell the difference with the AMD-64 kernel, the KDM
login is reached faster than with the 686 kernel.
But...

No, that's what the "a-i" part does, it's short for "auto-install".
However, I'm not using the -OSE build, I'm using the
free-for-personal-use Enterprise build directly from VirtualBox.
I'm not surprised that the -OSE works just fine, the Debian developers
are in no way credited with the true quality and sheer VOLUME of
their work.
I guess I'll open a bug report on VB.com and see what happens.
