Not true, at least in Tbird, where displaying inline images is
independent from presenting emails in text or html mode.
Then some skulduggery is involved in TBird's text only mode since to render an inline jpeg (embedded or linked),inline with the mail content, the mode has to be go away from text only and enter html mode


TBird doesn't display images to me in text-only mode. They appear as attachments. Is this some setting you can set?

View->"Message Body As"->"Plain Text"
View->"Display Attachments Inline"   <<< make sure this is Checked
