I have a PC with an AMD chip using Lenny (stable), amd64 port.

When I try to run the weather bureau radar loop:

I get an error message: "Java is necessary for radar looping and is best optimized using Java version 1.4.2 or higher." What packages should I install so I can use Java?

Depends on which branch you run. Here's the Sid list. You need the plugin (and, of course, to restart your browser).

$ apt-cache search java | grep ^sun | cut -d\  -f1
sunflow
sun-java5-bin
sun-java5-demo
sun-java5-doc
sun-java5-fonts
sun-java5-jdk
sun-java5-jre
sun-java5-plugin
sun-java5-source
sun-java6-bin
sun-java6-demo
sun-java6-doc
sun-java6-fonts
sun-java6-javadb
sun-java6-jdk
sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-plugin
sun-java6-source
