VLC not showing video

How do i get video to work on vlc. I noticed this since I reconfigure kernel.

Running from terminal I see xvid has issues

wakariera@debian:~$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6h Janus
[00000304] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
^Csignal 2 received, terminating vlc - do it again in case it gets stuck
[00000281] main playlist: stopping playback

vlc -vvv --no-plugins-cache --list |grep ffmpeg gives me

VLC media player 0.8.6h Janus
[00000001] main private debug: checking builtin modules
[00000001] main private debug: checking plugin modules
[00000001] main private debug: recursively browsing `/usr/lib/vlc'
[00000001] main private warning: cannot load module `/usr/lib/vlc/codec/libffmpeg_plugin.so' (/usr/lib/vlc/codec/libffmpeg_plugin.so: undefined symbol: img_resample) [00000001] main private debug: module bank initialized, found 215 modules

I dont think reinstall would help so anyone with advice on what to do next!

I came across apt-get install libavformat-dev libavcodec-dev libpostproc-dev suggestion on ubuntu machine but would those work for my Lenny?

Kernel 2.6.26 Gnome,KDE,Fluxbox etc... I have only recently recompiled kernel trying to get ipw2100 working.

Thanks in advance happy people!
