Thanks everyone for the reply. 

Nigel's recommendation, MhWaveedit, is exactly what I am looking for -- 
as simple as possible. Ecasound is powerful, but it's almost 5 times 
bigger than MhWaveedit, and presumably can't view wave diagram, as 
MhWaveedit does, since its interface is ncurses.
