because new kernels are not automatically installed. You need to
specify a specific kernel to install *or* install a kernel
meta-package. 

I recommend you install 

linux-image-2.6-686

that package will track the latest kernel, more or less. 

and yes, that's -686. There are no -k7 kernels anymore.
