"which xlogin" reports nothing.
While the X login display is visible,
dalton:~# ps aux | grep login
root 3020 0.0 0.2 3068 704 pts/0 R+ 09:03 0:00 grep login
and
dalton:~# ps aux | grep x
root 694 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 09:02 0:00 [ata_aux]
root 2576 0.0 0.1 1716 408 ? Ss 09:03 0:00 /sbin/klogd -x

root 2978 0.0 0.3 5440 976 ? Ss 09:03 0:00 /usr/bin/xdm
root 2994 4.4 2.7 12264 6976 tty7 Ss+ 09:03 0:02 /usr/bin/X :0 v

root 3021 0.0 0.4 3644 1032 pts/0 R+ 09:04 0:00 ps aux
.
So the most likely candidates for the "xlogin widget"
are xdm and X. But where are the parameters telling
it to make the graphical display on the server and
how can I tell it to just use good old login?
The xdm manual is certainly not helping!
Thanks for any further ideas, ... Peter E.
