For a beginner, one of the easiest ways to setup a new printer is to use the printer setup utility that KDE or Gnome offers. For example, in KDE: K Menu > Settings > Printers > tab 'Add' > Add Printer/Class... Then a 'wizard' will lead you through the printer installation.
