I have found that this is not necessarily needed, e.g. alsa-drivers 1.0.18
works fine with everything else being 1.0.17

No need for that, just sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

alsaconf is really meant for some cases of ISA cards, and often
using alsaconf on pci cards just confuses the primary issue(s).
