I'm wanting to use the advanced features of my new HP PhotoSmart C8180.
Unfortunately, the version of hplip in etch doesn't seem to enjoy full
support for this fine printer. A ppd is available and printing works, but
the printer is not auto-detected as it should be, and hp-toolbox shows the
device as "unsupported".
Anyway, I'm already using a mixed system:
bss@dellbuntu:~$ apt-cache policy

Pinned packages:
bss@dellbuntu:~$ apt-cache policy hplip
hplip:
Installed: 1.6.10-3etch1
Candidate: 1.6.10-3etch1
Version table:

So, I figured I'd just install the version from testing. This does not work
as well as I'd hoped.
Using the aptitude CLI "aptitude install hplip=2.8.6.b-1" results endless
prompts to continue resolving dependencies until all my RAM and swap are
exhausted and the kernel kills aptitude.
Using the aptitude CUI, I open up the hplip package info, highlight the
2.8.6.b-1 version, and press '+'. This results in some breakage and a
suggestion. The first suggestion involves removing hplip; I reject that
action for hplip and request another suggestsion. This suggestion involves
keeping hplip at version 1.6.10-3etch1; I reject that action for hplip and
request another suggestion. Aptitute begins "thinking" and continues until
all my RAM and swap are consumed and the kernel kills aptitude.
The package dependencies that the aptitude CLI spits out are:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libsnmp15: Depends: libsnmp-base (>= 5.4.1~dfsg-11) but 5.2.3-7etch4 is
installed.

Depends: python-support (>= 0.7.1) but 0.5.6 is installed.
Depends: python-dbus (>= 0.80) but it is not installable
Depends: hplip-data (> 2.8.6.b) but 1.6.10-3etch1 is installed.
libperl5.10: Depends: perl-base (= 5.10.0-17) but 5.8.8-7etch3 is installed.
ghostscript: Conflicts: gs-common (< 8.62) but 0.3.11 is installed.
Conflicts: gs-gpl (< 8.62) but 8.54.dfsg.1-5etch1 is installed.
Any suggestions? I can live with the old hplip, but I'd rather upgrade to it
if possible.
