use the RAID array only for /home.  If so, I wonder why I should bother
with RAID, as all data in the /home partition-directory needs to be
backed up periodically in any event.

Because:
(a) you don't do continuous backups, so there would be some data loss, and (b) restoring from backup media takes *time*. If downtime is expensive, you spend the extra money to minimize the possibility of downtime.
