Laptop external display not showing mouse pointer

Hi. Up to date Sid (not that I think that matters)
I'm having a serious problem trying to use an external monitor on my laptop.
Sony Vaio GRT170, with an Nvidia Ge5600 card.
The external video worked in console mode from the start. I discovered
the problem with "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" where it will not do
anything other than choose a keyboard, by trying to get X to display
correctly. Video timings and modlines! Ouch.
Well, Knoppix displayed correctly, but there was no mouse pointer. As
I wibbled with the touchpad, the icons would get their "mouse-over
effects", so the input was working. It just wasn't being displayed.
The screen on my laptop is dying, but if I flip the lid switch I get
light for some 5-10 seconds. This allows me to see that the LCD _is_
displaying the mouse pointer, even while the external display does
not.
Is this some kind of "feature" for not cluttering an overhead
projector with a mouse cursor when doing presentations?
Anyway, if anyone has a clue how to enable the mouse pointer to be
displayed on an external monitor, I'd appreciate it.
Curt-
