It looks a little bit weird...

WHat about:

    /dev/sdb1 /media/daniel-external ext3 defaults,rw,user,noauto 0 0

But it would be bette, if you geve your externel USB disk a  LABEL  like

   tunee2fs -L Dani_ext /dev/sdb1

and then use

    LABLE=Dani_ext /media/daniel-external ext3 defaults,rw,user,noauto 0 0

to mount it.
