Well, if you don't want a display manager you could always use apt-get
to remove it, and it should automatically not be in use; But if it was
installed automatically (The GNOME metapackage) then I would just keep
it installed, but disabled.

Try installing sysv-rc-conf (apt-get install sysv-rc-conf) and turning
of any *dm you see on every runlevel (Just for a note, runlevel2 is the
default Debian runlevel, as opposed to SuSE which uses 1 if I remember
correctly).
