Thanks a lot! I finally had some time to take the machine down and repair the filesystems: that was the problem! It now works perfectly, and can do all the things where it crashed before. It found some error in my /tmp and my /var. I have now stress tested the filesystems to make sure they really work and they seem fine.
Here is what I did:
Boot from knoppix cd (I used 4.0)
ensure you have a network connection
edit /etc/apt/sources.list in knoppix to make sure it downloads only from sarge instead of stable unstable testing experimental etc.
aptitude update
aptitude install lvm2
lndir /lib/lvm-200/ /usr/sbin/
vgscan
vgchange -a y
then I can use xfs_check and xfs_repair on /dev/<VGname>/<LVname>
I still don't know why this filesystem corruption occured while I was updating to etch...
