Could be. But your question lacks important details such as what exactly you meant by "everything is messed up", "standard shortcuts". Please be specific.

While you are at it, consider using vim instead of vi unless you have a good reason not to do so.

Well, therein lies my lack of experience! I didn't even know there was a difference, vim is what I "meant" to use but didn't know I wasn't, hence the apt-get install vim made it all good! :)
