ATI X1050 fglrx freezes garbage



Hi!

I bought a Gigabyte X1050 AGP graphics card with an ATI X1050 GPU
because I read (in 'man radeon' and at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver) 3D acceleration
would be well supported by the open source xorg radeon driver.

Since 3D worked badly I'm trying fglrx. glxgears fps increased but
3D still sucks:

Second life often freezes after a while and I have to push the reset
button.

Flightgear fgfs display is a terrible mess. See

Sauerbraten changes display resolution and exits.

The first time an application uses 3D causes Xorg to use full CPU.
Just running e.g. glxgears for a moment is enough to cure this
problem until X restarts. During 'shutdown' kdm won't respond in
'/etc/init.d/kdm stop' and the shutdown will be very slow due to the
busy Xorg.

fglrx-driver 8.42.3-3
fglrx-kernel-2.6.22 8.42.3-3+2.6.22-10.00.Custom
fglrx-kernel-src 8.42.3-3

I did "a) Build with module-assistant (recommended)" as described in
/usr/share/doc/fglrx-kernel-src/README.Debian.gz . Worked flawlessly.

I compiled a 2.6.22 kernel with .config from the
linux-headers-2.6.22-3-k7 package because my gcc is 4.2.3 and the
kernel in linux-image-2.6.22-3-k7 was compiled with 4.1.? IIRC.

I hope I removed all from previous nvidia and fglrx installs.

Does anyone have an X1050 running fine?
