Removable hard disk not recognized under Lenny

I vaguely recall asking this before, but not any answer, and web searches
aren't helping.

I have a removable USB drive in an enclosure. It was automatically
recognized the last time I used it (September), but now that I'm trying to
use it again, it can't be mounted because the system doesn't recognize it as
a disk drive.

When I plug it in, remove it, and replug it, /var/log/messages reports:

Nov 11 20:37:27 NewPicking kernel:  =======================
Nov 11 20:42:39 NewPicking kernel: usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2

I'm using Lenny, as I wrote, with linux-image 2.6.22-k7. Here's the output
of lsmod | grep usb:

usb_storage 77440 0
usbhid 26144 0
hid 25792 1 usbhid
usbcore 125704 5 usb_storage,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
scsi_mod 137356 5 sr_mod,sd_mod,firewire_sbp2,usb_storage,libata
ide_core 114436 5 usb_storage,ide_cd,ide_disk,generic,via82cxxx

Not only was the disk recognized fine a few months ago, Windows continues to
recognize it easily.

If it matters, it contains one VFAT partition.

So what obvious thing am I missing? Any other information that will help
figure out what's up?

Thanks.
