I did a little bit of more searching to find the answer. After going

I found a hint that you & I need to install the files:
libsox-fmt-mp3 & libsox-fmt-ogg
in order to get sox back to being able to manipulate these files
directly. There is also a bug report filed that suggests that the
recommends were not shown on this package.
