yeah, this is definitely not a lyx problem, so you were right to come
here.

What were you trying to do that precipitated this situation? Were you
trying to install lyx? 

You only have one cd-rom listed and I'd be the lyx is not on that cd. 

If you have a reasonable network connection, I recommend you
reconfigure sources.list for network installation of packages. Refer
to: http://www.debian.org/mirror/list and select a reasonable mirror
for you to use. 

Put that mirror in your /etc/apt/sources.list with an entry similar to
this:

deb http://mirror.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free

also, comment out the cd-rom line.

then from a root terminal, issue the following commands and provide us
the exact output:

apt-get update
apt-get -s dist-upgrade

etch is the current stable. It is ridicuously easy to maintain.
