You didn't specify how you are starting X (startx, kdm, gdm, ...). Until 
etch the dpi was forced to 96 in gdm/kdm. To set the correct dpi you 
need to tell your X server the dimensions of your screen. In 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf put in the Monitor section

	Display <width> <height>

where <width> and <height> are the physical dimensions in mm of the 
picture area of your monitor.
