Apache-SSL - PHP5 not working

hi everyone

i have a problem with apache-ssl and php5 playing nice
together. php works fine when loading via http, but
when you load via https i get prompted about saving
the php file to disk without it being executed.
straight html works fine in both http and https.

i've added "AddType application/x-httpd-php .php" to
the httpd.conf for apache2, which got php working for
http requests... AND i've tried adding it to various
other apache2 and apache-ssl files as suggested by
others, including /etc/apache-ssl/httpd.conf, but
nonthing has worked.

i read some posts around the internet from a few
others who have the same problem, but found no
solution. (usually just add "AddType
application/x-httpd-php .php" advice.)

i started with a fresh install of debian 4.0 r0, KDE
version, installing from CD1, and then added the
following packages via the internet in the following
order...

~~~~~
apt-get install php5
apt-get install php5-gd
apt-get install mysql-client
apt-get install php5-mysql
apt-get install apache-ssl
apt-get install free-java-sdk
apt-get install no-ip
apt-get install phpmyadmin
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install putty
apt-get install proftpd
apt-get install mysql-server-5.0
(did this after realizing mysql-client wasn't the full
package.)
~~~~~~~

apart from adding the "AddType" to httpd.conf, i
haven't made any major changes to the configuration,
and the few changes i made trying to get apache-ssl to
work with php have been reversed.

does anyone have any clue what might be happening
here? i agree it seems as though adding an "AddType"
should fix it, but where? could i be missing a package
for apache-ssl?

thanks!
