To add to this question: have people done this and had good luck with
it? I've got two servers and a machine at home I've tried backing up
to a USB drive, and in each case after a few weeks/months I start
getting hardware errors from the USB drive, and the files I backed up
aren't accessible. The two servers are Debian installations, both
with a relatively recent 2.4 kernel; the one at home is a Mac.

If you've done this and had it run successfully for a year or so,
what hardware are you using (enclosure/adapter and drive), and what
kernel?

Thanks!
