Welcome to Debian!

If you were able to use the netinstall to install the basic etch system,
that is quite a good start. So you seen to have not configured the mouse
properly as indicated by the 'no core pointer' message. So try:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and choose a different mouse?

the common ones are: /dev/input/mouse or /dev/psaux.

Do you have a usb mouse, a serial one, a ps2 one?

Just tell us more like what video card and mouse you have and any thing
else that might help.
