A few questions

Hi,

Having now got Debian 'etch' installed and working nicely on my compaq DL380G2 (4*36Gb using RAID5 on the intergrated SmartArray 5i works flawlessly and fast), I now am thinking about some of the tasks I need this machine to ideally perform.

One of them is as a print server. Unfortuately the DL380 doesn't have a parallel port (being rack mount it would probably, but i got it for £10 and don't have a rack cabinet, but ain't going to knock a gift horse so to speak! so will try to make best use of it as I can).

Anyway, I used to have my old HP LaserJet 6L on my Beige G3 PowerMac running OS X 10.2. Worked fine till I retired the machine due to being too old, the machine that replaced it (733Mhz G4 Quicksilver) had OS X 10.4 on it, and the Belkin USB -> // adapter didn't work with Tiger for some reason (though had worked with Jaguar). Anyway, I've still got the adapter, and wondered if anyone knew if it works with Linux (specifically the 2.6.18 kernel in Debian 'etch')? i'm not at home presently and not sure where the adapter is, so before hunting for it wanted to know if anyone had had any joy.

Second question is regarding adding USB2.0 /Firewire to the machine to enable use of USB2.0/Firewire external drives, which would allow me to move drives easily between machines. Does anyone have any recommendation for combined USB2.0/firewire PCI cards? I have a via chipset one and didn't have much joy getting a USB2.0 drive recognised/working with the previous server (dual PIII/500 intel 440gx+ board).

Thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to provide, all appreciated,

Kelly
