Etch / ThinkPad 600E / How to blacklist the soundcard?

Significant changes have been made between Sarge and Etch. The files mentioned long long ago to cure PnP trying to load an AC97 driver for a ThinkPad 600E with integrated CS423x chip are no longer there. Where has the inequivalent functionality been moved?
