Martin,

I'm no expert, but it's curious that Linux obviously finds the card
(from your initial post), then this error you report appears. Perhaps
something else is attempting to use the card? Did you make other
modifications someplace? Are there multiple sound cards?

As mentioned previously, I have the same card working in my plain
vanilla etch installation. Here's what I see, perhaps you could compare
with yours:

/var/log/dmesg:
isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...

isapnp: Card 'ESS ES1868 Plug and Play AudioDrive'

isapnp: 1 Plug & Play card detected total

pnp: Device 01:01.00 activated.
pnp: Device 01:01.01 activated.

Perhaps this could help someone diagnose your problem by comparison:

~$ cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.12rc1 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux magic 2.6.18-4-686 #1 SMP Mon Mar 26 17:17:36 UTC 2007 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
ESS AudioDrive ES1868 at 0x220, irq 5, dma1 1, dma2 0

Audio devices:
0: ESS AudioDrive ES1868

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices:
0: ESS AudioDrive ES1868 MIDI

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: ESS AudioDrive ES1868

Let me know if you need anything similar.

Maybe a more knowledgeable reader could chime in with better suggestions.

Good luck!

Ralph
