An alternative (if you'll pardon the pun) is to use sensible-browser,
sensible-editor, and sensible-pager from the debianutils package. Those
consult environment variables to determine which corresponding
application to launch. It is easy to imaging extending that approach to
other cases where similar functionality is offered by two or more
applications.
