You're right. Pointing my sources.list to http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ instead of http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ solved the problem :-)

http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/Release is currently a 404 for
some reason, which prevents apt from validating the Packages files.
Suggest you use a different mirror for now.
