I doubt that's it, because XDM runs ~/.xsession (Or was it ~/.xinitrc?
I can't remember which, I just use a symbolic link between the two).
In this case I doubt it is the display manager, although it wouldn't
hurt for Terrence to try wdm and see what happens when he runs a
default session; It seems to work fine for me.
