Excellent analysis and smart question!  Thank you.

However, I'm going to say "try this...".

Edit (nano is a simple editor) /etc/X11/xorg.conf and comment out
this line:
InputDevice "Generic Mouse"

Based on my reading of your analysis, that should work.
