Look at how much church attendance jumped in the US in the weeks following 9/11. To many people, the world was not as certain and secure as they thought, and so they looked for spiritual guidance. It is the same effect that causes people to not care much about the economy as long as it is doing good, but then worry like crazy when seem even the least bit about to change.
