Did you try using /usr/share/vim/vim70/vimrc_example.vim as ~/.vimrc, then? If
it works this way you know that there???s a problem with your config file.
Yes, that was what my ~/.vimrc was based on. AS I mentioned, I had this working
fine prior to the upgrade to Etch two weeks ago. I don't recall over writing
anything, but obviously I did. <shrug>
I'm baffled, I've searched in the suspect places, but I don't see anything
obvious, (at least to me).

Actually, just /sudo aptitude install vim-full/. I had the same problem on Ubuntu a while back, and it took me a week to figure out how to get syntax highlighting to work.
