You can choose and configure the Yamaha card (if you are using Alsa) using alsaconf. This certainly worked for me in Etch. The configuration survives reboots and output is no longer directed to the onboard sound chip. See http://newbiedoc.berlios.de/wiki/Sound_in_Debian_GNU/Linux#Check_your_hardware (sections 3 and 4).
