Can NOT record sound on my acer notebook

My debian system is installed under vmwarw workstation in windows 2000.
The pc is ACER travelmate 2440, which has on board ac97 sound card. 
I just install the stable version 2.6.8-3-386 

I can hear the sound, but can not record.
Does anybody know the reason?
