Problem with gnome-sudoku, python, cairo?????

When I try to run gnome-sudoku I get the following messages:
---
don@corvus:~$ gnome-sudoku
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/games/gnome-sudoku", line 10, in ?
    from gnome_sudoku.gnome_sudoku import start_game
  File "/var/lib/python-support/python2.4/gnome_sudoku/gnome_sudoku.py", line 1, in ?
    import gtk, gobject, gtk.glade
  File "/var/lib/python-support/python2.4/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 45, in ?
    from _gtk import *
ImportError: /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2: undefined symbol: FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden
---

The system is a k7 recent sarge->etch upgrade with continuing daily
dist-upgrades. I have a 686 system and an amd64 on which gnome sudoku
runs perfectly. The libcairo2 files are identical between the i386
systems.  I've reinstalled libcairo2, python 2.4, python-support and
python-gtk, but no change.

I have no experience with python and am stumped as to where to look
and what to try. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Don
