Yes.
Well, maybe not. I was taught modularity (i.e., "data hiding" and
"loose coupling") back in my early 1980s /Introduction To COBOL I/
class, and that book was written in the 1970s.
*However*, as we all know, *knowing* and *doing* are two totally
different things. Linus' great genius has been *social*: an
excellent programmer who has a vision (consistent userland
interface, changeable kernel) and has maintained the respect of
other programmers for 15 years.
The GPL has been immensely helpful, since it lets people copy the
kernel and try new ideas before coming to him with huge patch sets.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.
