For me, it was the Xwindow system itself.
In 1995 when I first installed Debian, I had been working on SunOS for
3 years. I wanted the same functionality at home that I had at work,
and I had tried Coherent and Solaris x86. Neither of them worked for
me, nor did they have the breadth of applications that Debian had
even at that time.
It was exceptionally easy to open native X-windows from work to my
system at home, so even if Debian didn't have the exact application,
I could still achieve my goals without having to do format
translations.
OpenOffice.org removed any requirement for Windows what so ever, and
now even the HP utility suite for my HP-all-in-one
printer/scanner/copier/fax has come into the Debian archive.
The "killer app" that keeps me happy with Debian is the vast archive
of software available combined with the automatic dependency
satisfaction. If not for that, everything would take longer, be
harder, and there would be little or no difference between using
Linux and getting by with Windows+Tucows.com.
