Thank you for this. I found I had to do one more thing---I added
GROUP="hal"

to the end of each of the relevant udev rules. Then when I added entries
to /etc/fstab using the udev-supplied device-names (and created the
relevant directories in /media/), everything worked the way I would like
it to.
