And how do you think, should dpkg find any files installed?

Never touch this directory if you do not know, what you are doing

/var/lib/dpkg/info/firefox.lists

is the file where all installed files are stored...

So if dpkg kan not more remove firefox, it does mean, that this file
is missing or not complete, but dpkg KNOW, there is a package...

So you NEED to install this firefox package to REMOVE it after.
