Can this Ubuntu livecd mount and read the harddrive? can you pull up a
terminal and see the hardrive with cfdisk? If so, then make note of
which modules are used to access the drive and you may have to
modprobe them manually from a terminal in the install.

If the modules you need aren't available in the install, then you can
perhaps put them on a floppy or some other media that you can read in
the install. have you looked for help on the debian-laptop list?
