I once had this exact same problem, and solved it by not loading the APM module until after I had exited X (i.e. when I was about to halt the system).(WW) Open ACPI failed (/proc/acpi/event) (Device or resource busy) (II) No APM support in BIOS or kernel
The nVidia drivers and apm don't seem to be able to be loaded at the same time without freezing the system, I'm afraid. I reported it here when I discovered it, but I haven't followed up to see if any fixes were made to either program.
