I have deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch mainmplayer seems to play the most different formats, esp when you have the w32codecs package installed. It's also very efficient. It can't fast forward some avi files when you don't have the whole file though, unlike totem-xine. The mplayer plugin seems to work for realplayer content e.g. bbc as well. mplayer also supports streaming over rtsp.
