Users cannot be found after upgrading deb packages

Hi all,

After I have upgraded the debian packages, some problems are taking place.

When I get into the system at first time (after upgrading the system)
I was able to log in the system as a normal user and everything looked
OK, but it cannot found the root user anymore, because when I type
"su" a sorry message is printed on my prompt. I cannot also to use
synaptic as it warns that root does not exist. So no way to log as
root. Futhermore the prompt as "mauricio@debian" was changed where the
user name was replaced by something that means "no user" or "user does
not exist".

When I rebooted later, the gdm user cannot be found as well during the
system startup. So I have tried to log as ordinary user, but it looks
that the user does not exist anymore too. The same keeps happening
with root.

Does anyone know how can I solve such issue?

BR,

Mauricio Lin.
