First, do you implicitly trust every single person on your network?  If
not, then you are really not secure.

The main thing is that NIS is old and generally unsupported.  Everything
is going to LDAP because it is a great deal more flexible and easier to
integrate with things like kerberos.  Not to say that it is impossible
with NIS, just more challenging.
