The short answer is to only buy systems or components from vendors who
support Linux.  In most circumstances, if a vendor supports one or more
versions of Linux, getting it to work on any arbitrary version should
not be too difficult.  What you run into, is that newer hardware may not
have in-kernel drivers available.  This may require you to hunt down
drivers and compile modules for your kernel.
