This is how I would do it:
1. Log out (not shutdown)
2. Switch to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1), login as root and shutdown the
display manager (gdm, kdm, ...)
3. Change monitor
4. run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
5. switch to a different console (ALT-F2) and login as normal user
6. startx to test my new config
7. start display manager.
